WOLFFORTH — Monterey came out strong Thursday night in their Gene Messer Shootout opener against the Decatur Eagles, but cold shooting on a cold December night doomed the Plainsmen in a 68-45 loss at Frenship’s Tiger Pit.
The Plainsmen opened a 13-7 lead midway through the first quarter and led 17-14 at the end of the period. But the Eagles started feeding 6-foot-6 post Parker Hicks inside, and Hicks’ hot hand helped the Eagles dominate the second quarter and open a 48-38 halftime lead.
